Vaccine Solidarity Now!

Vaccines should be treated as public goods!

To: European Commission

While wealthier countries are proceeding with vaccinations against COVID-19, many countries in Europe and the rest of the world are left empty-handed because they cannot access vaccines. We will not be safe until all of us are safe.

COVID-19 does not recognise borders and neither should the solutions aiming to bring an end to the deadly virus that has been wreaking havoc around the globe. This virus has proven how interconnected our world is.

New and more-infectious strains emerging in Europe and beyond could undo our work if we don't reach effective coverage fast enough - and that means everywhere. The global management of this pandemic is truly the key to ending it for all.

We call upon the European Commission to work towards a global approach to vaccinations:

  • Vaccines, especially those developed using public funds, should be declared and treated as public goods
  • Temporarily waiver intellectual property rights relating to all technologies for the diagnosis, prevention and control of COVID-19
  • Develop a global vaccine strategy within the framework of the United Nations, the WHO, and the international vaccine alliances, GAVI and CEPI, taking into account the special challenges of poorer countries
