Dear European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen,
We the undersigned call for the immediate introduction of an EU pay transparency directive, necessary to close the all-too-wide gender pay gap. This pay gap varies from country to country and is on average 15% in Europe. This is unacceptable for a European Union that claims to prioritise gender equality.
The COVID-19 crisis has intensified pay inequality, with women facing the brunt of growing unemployment, poverty, housing insecurity and more. Any further delay in pay transparency drives a knife into the heart of efforts to close the gender pay gap, right when it is needed most.
November 4th is Equal Pay Day, which marks the fact that from now until the end of the year, women in Europe are ostensibly working without pay, and women of colour have already been doing so. Men have held economic advantages for far too long, and we are done waiting for essential action to achieve equality.
Sincerely,
