Time to Change Fast Fashion
Fast fashion is everywhere, and its path of destruction is one of the most atrocious on earth.
From systematically exploiting workers, using more carbon than the aviation and shipping industries combined to move the latest trends around the world, and behemoth mounds of trash heaps filled with last season's hottest styles (not to mention pollution, pesticide use, microplastics… the list goes on), it's safe to say that fast fashion is a gigantic threat to us having any chance at a safe planetary future.
The European Commission has committed to publishing an EU Strategy for Sustainable Textiles this year, which will determine key regulations to mandate the conditions for design, production, waste practices for clothing companies.
A strong strategy will mandate mega-corporations to snap into action if they want to do business in Europe. Will you add your name to demand the Commission start putting an end to climate-killing power of fast fashion?
We call on the European commission to:
- Set a minimum standard for the sustainability, toxicity and conditions of textiles manufactured in or entering the EU, in consultation with experts and civil society.
- Ensure accountability for companies that violate these standards.
- Mandate brands to offer consumers tools and knowledge to repair, update or redesign their clothes.
