The clock is ticking.
Three years after the historic Paris Climate agreement it is clear we have to do more, much more, to halt climate change. But here is the good news: The solutions for a rapid shift to a Green economy are there. People across Europe, and across the world, are rising up to demand action. So now it’s a matter of political will.
Now it’s time to deliver.
Science shows that Europe’s current targets of cutting emissions by 40% in 2030 do not go far enough to keep the world’s temperature below 1.5C. This would be disastrous, especially considering the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that shows the huge impacts a temperature rise above 1.5C would have in terms of sea-level rising, biodiversity, health, food security and economic loss. In fact, it is not even enough to keep rising temperature below 2C. Clearly, the EU is not fulfilling what it signed up to under the Paris Agreement. Scientists have analysed that the temperature on our earth will rise at least 3 degrees more if countries do not substantially increase their commitments.
We demand EU leaders to commit to at least 55% cut in emissions by 2030 to avoid the further risk of climate change.
We demand you show this commitment to tackling climate change by taking bold action today. Ireland is bottom of the table in Europe on climate action for a second year running. As a first step after COP24, you can show your commitment to climate change by rewetting the bogs, which would promote carbon capture, biodiversity and habitats for native species all at once.
