To: Ursula von der Leyen and Frans Timmermans
The message from the scientists is clear: we have less than 10 years to drastically change course. A global citizens’ movement led by young people is demanding climate justice. The future is decided now!
In the wake of this mounting pressure you - the newly appointed European Commission - have announced you will put forward a European Climate Law during your first 100 days (by March 2020). You - President Ursula von der Leyen and Vice-President Frans Timmermans - have made many statements congratulating yourselves and your ambitions.
But talk about targets set several decades in the future is empty unless accompanied by immediate and concrete measures:
- phase out all public subsidies to fossil fuels by 2021 - a huge problem that you, the Commissioners, seem particularly reluctant to address 🤔
- align the EU’s budget with the Paris Agreement and ensure that 50% of the budget is earmarked for tackling the climate crisis ☀️
- set up an independent body of climate scientists to monitor and evaluate all of the Commission’s policies and make sure these are climate proof 🌍
The message from the street is clear - listen to the science! Now is the time to put pressure on the Commissioners. Don’t allow them to give in to the fossil fuel lobbyists and tell them directly what a #RealClimateLaw should look like!
